…Call on Government for Members’ Welfare, Set to Host Night of Legends
The Forum of Former Elected Councillors in Akwa Ibom State has urged the media to lend its support to Governor Umo Eno and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, pledging their backing for both leaders’ second-term bids.
The State Leader of the Forum, Hon. Pastor Joe Mbong, made the appeal on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, at the NUJ Secretariat, Uyo.
Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Mbong reaffirmed the Forum’s support for the duo, describing their leadership at both state and national levels as one that has strengthened democracy and deepened development. He expressed confidence that their continuity in office would consolidate the gains already recorded and further advance the welfare of the people.
He appealed to the government to prioritise the welfare of former councillors who, he noted, played vital roles in grassroots governance and community development.
The State Leader of the Forum congratulated the newly elected NUJ executive council and commended the Union for its continuous pivotal role in promoting truth, accountability, and good governance, describing the media as “the conscience of society.
According to him, the visit was to also seek partnership and collaboration with the NUJ asserting that when grassroots leaders and the media collaborate, the dividends of democracy can be better projected, while the challenges of governance can be more effectively addressed.
Hon. Mbong further disclosed that the Forum’s plan and preparation to host a special event tagged “Night of Legends”, designed to honour distinguished leaders across the state are in top gear.
In his response, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John commended the Forum for recognising the importance of the media and assured them of the Union’s readiness to deepen collaboration with stakeholders in the interest of democracy and development.
He commended the Forum of Former Elected Councillors for their initiative to recognise the contributions of leaders to grassroots development, describing their planned “Night of Legends” as a laudable idea that would celebrate leaders who have played vital roles in strengthening democracy and community governance.
Comrade John also cautioned the Forum against internal divisions and destructive politics, urging them to focus on effective representation, welfare of members, and constructive criticism and engagement with the government.
“Politics should not be a mechanism for destruction but an avenue for growth. Even when there are differences, let the Forum remain united, whoever brings value back from whichever political camp should return it to strengthen the body,” he advised.
On welfare, the NUJ Chairman encouraged the Forum not to depend solely on government intervention but to also provide internal support for members, describing welfare as the backbone of a strong organisation.
He pledged the union’s readiness to give the Forum publicity and enlightenment support, assuring the group of the NUJ’s continuous partnership in promoting grassroots development and effective governance in Akwa Ibom State.
