Fake Doctor Arrested Over Illegal Abortion, Murder in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected fake doctor, Sunday Okon Akpan, over an alleged illegal abortion that led to the death of a 35-year-old woman in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m., after the deceased, identified as Blessing Sunday Etim, reportedly went to work at the Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village.

Police reports indicate that the suspect, who presented himself as a medical doctor, allegedly attempted to secretly dump the woman’s body in her residence after the failed procedure. He was confronted by a co-tenant and fled the scene, abandoning the corpse. Detectives later observed a premature fetus emerging from the victim’s body, suggesting that she had undergone an abortion.

Further investigations revealed that Akpan, a resident of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, is not a licensed medical doctor or nurse, but a community health practitioner. He allegedly used his facility to conduct illegal abortions and other unapproved medical services. The health center has since been deserted.

The body of the deceased has been deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy, while police say investigations are ongoing.

The Police Command assured the public that more details will be provided as inquiries progress.
