…Donate Medicated Eyeglasses, Essential Drugs to Akwa Ibom Residents
In a remarkable display of compassion and community service, God’s Great Family Assembly, an interdenominational Christian fellowship, in partnership with Dr. Modesty Care Foundation, has organized a free medical outreach for residents, traders, and worshippers around Akpan Adem Market, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The outreach, which formed part of activities marking the Fellowship’s 2025 Feast of the Tabernacle, held from October 1 to 8, 2025, at Udo Umana Street, Uyo, provided hundreds of beneficiaries with access to basic healthcare services and medications at no cost.
Speaking during the event, Deaconess Bassey Johnson, a member of the Church Executive Council, explained that the initiative was approved by the Foundation as part of its mission to promote preventive healthcare and community well-being.
Deaconess Johnson noted that the outreach was prompted by the increasing cases of untreated medical conditions among Church members, market traders and low-income earners living in Uyo, many of whom cannot afford regular health checks or medications.
“For this reason, we conducted medical screening for blood pressure, blood sugar levels, malaria, and eye conditions, where we also donated medicated eyeglasses and essential drugs to participants,” she said.
Deaconess Johnson who is also a Pharmacist explained the importance of early detection and regular monitoring of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which remain among the leading causes of morbidity in Nigeria, stressing that participants received on-the-spot counseling on healthy diet, stress management, and infection prevention.
She expressed concern that many people, due to their busy schedules or lack of finances, often neglect regular health checks, leaving them unaware of their medical status. According to her, the medical outreach was designed to assist residents of Uyo in assessing their health conditions and creating awareness of preventive care.
“We discovered more than 20 individuals with dangerously high blood pressure readings, some as high as 225 over 140, without them even knowing it. Such conditions could lead to sudden collapse or stroke at any moment. We administered emergency treatment and injections to help stabilize their condition and prevent possible complications,” she revealed.
She expressed gratitude to Dr Modesty Care Foundation for providing the essential drugs, medicated eyeglasses, and other medical supplies that made the outreach a success.
Also speaking, Mr. Udeme James, Secretary General of Dr Modesty Care Foundation, said the Foundation is renowned for its humanitarian services, including scholarships, medical aid, and empowerment programs for people in remote communities.
He noted that participants underwent vital signs checks, optical examinations, and medical consultations before receiving prescriptions and free medications. “The Foundation provided various eyeglasses, drugs, and treatments to complement our mission of supporting the needy through healthcare and human capital development,” he stated.
Mr. James urged beneficiaries to adhere strictly to their prescriptions and trust God for complete healing, emphasizing that “while doctors treat, only God heals.”
Beneficiaries, including Mr. James Jimmy Obio and Dame Ime Isaac Jaja, commended the church and the Foundation for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. They noted that the outreach would help people know their health status and receive proper medical attention.
“It’s not easy to buy medicated eyeglasses or essential drugs in today’s economy. Providing them free of charge is a rare and commendable gesture,” one of them said.
The weeklong event, which featured activities such as Children’s Day, Youth Day, Couples’ Day, and Widows’ Day, concluded on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the Church Auditorium of God’s Great Family Assembly, 205 Udo Umana Street, Uyo.
