…Scores Health Commissioner High, Describes Ongoing Reforms in the Sector as Commendable
The House of Representatives Committee on Health has commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its robust investments and far-reaching reforms in the healthcare sector, describing the state as a model for effective healthcare delivery and insurance implementation in Nigeria.
The commendation came during an official oversight visit by the Committee over the weekend to assess the performance of healthcare institutions, infrastructure, and policy implementation across the state.
Hon. Amos Magaji, the Chairman of the Committee in his remarks scored the Commissioner for Health, Dr Emmanuel Ekem John high in his bid to restore dignity, integrity and renewed focus on primary healthcare delivery in the State.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Magaji said the Committee was impressed with the transformation witnessed in the health sector under the leadership of the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John noting that Akwa Ibom has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the well-being of its citizens.
“We are indeed impressed by what we have seen. Akwa Ibom State has shown serious political will in strengthening its healthcare system, from primary health centers to tertiary facilities. The level of investment and attention given to the sector is highly commendable, and we encourage the State to prioritize and even do more” Magaji stated.
He particularly lauded the Akwa Ibom Health Insurance Scheme (AKHIS), for recording and capturing over 145 citizens encouraging them to do even more better. He described it as one of the most functional and citizen-focused healthcare initiatives in the country, while noting that the scheme has expanded access to quality and affordable medical services, reducing the burden of out-of-pocket expenses on residents.
The Committee Chairman further assured that the National Assembly will continue to support states that prioritize the health and well-being of their citizens through enabling policies and budgetary interventions.
In his remarks, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Dr Emmanuel Ekem John expressed gratitude to the Committee for its visit and commendation. He highlighted some of the state’s ongoing reforms, including the Governors readiness to recruit 2,000 new health workers, rehabilitation and renovation of general hospitals, Ukanafun which will be commissioned and investment in modern medical equipment to enhance service delivery.
He said that the administration of Governor Umo Eno has placed healthcare at the heart of its development agenda. “We have revamped several facilities, improved working conditions for healthcare workers, and strengthened our health insurance coverage to ensure no citizen is left behind,” Dr John stated.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining the gains made in the sector and pledged to collaborate with the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to consolidate on current achievements.
