The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno for fulfilling his car promise to the immediate past NUJ executive members and his appointment of the former Union Chairman, as SSA on Local Media and the completion of the Auditorium Complex.

Chairman of the Union, Comrade Nsibiet John extended the Union’s appreciation to the Governor on Sunday, August 3, 2025, during a special service at All Grace Household Ministry, Uyo.

He stressed that the Governor’s gesture to appoint Comrade Etuk was one of the best decisions he could have made which will bring growth to the Union and society.

“The Governor has done nobly by appointing one of the best hands we have in the Union, and we believe that with his level of experience and exposure, he will deliver massively for the growth of the Union and the State,” he said.

In his remarks, Comrade John congratulated his successor, Comrade Amos Etuk, on his appointment as the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Local Media.

He described the appointment as “well-deserved”, adding that it could be equated to putting”a square peg in a square hole”.

He noted that Etuk’s transformative and effective leadership as NUJ chairman is a testament to his past successes and a sign of more to come.

Speaking at the occasion, Comrade Amos Etuk thanked God for a successful transition and for Comrade Nsibiet John’s emergence as Chairman, describing him as a “worthy successor.” He also thanked the electoral board for conducting a free, fair, and credible election and the entire church for their support and prayers.

“Today, we have come to testify of the goodness of the Lord for not just a successful election but my newest appointment by the Governor, as earlier prophesied by our father, Reverend Ibup Emah, who took it upon himself for many years to be praying for me and all members,” he added.

In a related development, the newly elected Chairman has expressed his gratitude to members of the Union for the confidence and mandate reposed on him.

He called on the society’s watchdogs to keep to the fundamental principles of objectivity, fairness, and balance in their reportage, while urging public office holders to only patronize professionals in the field.

While appealing for maturity and guarded utterances among the political class, Comrade John made a case for the avoidance of character assassination. He submitted that the media will only report what is said and not put words in anyone’s mouth, stressing that the media would only commend those performing well in their respective positions.

“We do not encourage praise singing in journalism, but there are instances where we need to appreciate the government for lifting a particular burden on the shoulders of the members of the Union,” he said, citing the Governor’s completion of the NUJ Auditorium Complex, which had been abandoned for eleven years, as well as the donation of cars to the immediate past State Executives of the Union.
