…pledges support for Holidays Mentorship Programme
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, has announced its readiness to support the Oro Nation Leadership Roundtable, particularly in its forthcoming Holidays Mentorship Programme.
The State Council Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, gave the assurance during a courtesy call on him by the Oro Nation Leadership Roundtable, held in his office on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
He commended the leadership of the Oro Nation Leadership Roundtable for consistently promoting youth development and giving the forum a clear identity, while stressing the importance of intentional investment in young people. He noted that leadership values must be instilled from an early age.
He further stated that the administration, which is crested for “Service,” is always ready to support ideas that bring growth to the Union and society. During the visit, the Convener, Barr. Omen Bassey, reeled out activities for the third edition of the Holidays Mentorship Programme, themed; “Grow on Time”, which is scheduled for Monday, September 1, to Friday, September 5, 2025.
“It is important not only to teach the young ones academically but also to prepare them psychologically for leadership while creating opportunities for them to thrive in their chosen fields for a better society,” he said.
Comrade John also appreciated Barr. Omen Bassey and Comrade John Ntekim, Senior Special Assistant to the Oro Federal Constituency House Member, for their professionalism and efficiency. He advised the group to encourage constructive criticism of leaders, while assuring them of the Union’s readiness to collaborate and support their initiatives.
Earlier, the Convener of the Oro Nation Leadership Roundtable, Barr. Omen Bassey, called on the NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, for support, noting that the programme is designed to guide and empower young people to become responsible ambassadors of society.
Barr. Bassey, who also serves as the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, lamented that for years several primary schools in Oro Nation have lagged behind in adequate teacher supply. He explained that the forum, through its initiatives, has raised awareness and engaged with government and stakeholders to seek support for improved educational development in the area.
Speaking further, he maintained that the forum’s objective is to address the challenges of pupils and youths through educational interventions. According to him, the forum has organized a series of programmes, including science quiz competitions, annual essay writing contests, provision of academic materials, and other developmental activities.
He also congratulated the NUJ Chairman on his landslide victory at the polls during the just-concluded Union election, expressing confidence that the Nsibiet John-led administration will perform credibly well and meet the expectations of journalists in the state.
The event was attended by officials of the Oro Nation Leadership Roundtable, including the Publicity Secretary, Mr. John Ntekim; the Chairman, Welfare Committee, Mr. Udeme Ukoh; the Chairman, Education Committee, Mr. Johnny Afahakan; the President, Akwa Ibom Female Students; the Vice President, University of Uyo; and Mr. Sampson Enyonekere.
