…As Church Donates Pediatric Wheelchairs, Walking Aids to AkwaIbomites
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has lauded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its humanitarian support to Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) in the state.
He gave the commendation on Friday, September 12, during the Empowering Lives Through Mobility humanitarian initiative held at the Women Development Centre, Uyo, where the Church donated pediatric wheelchairs and assistive walking devices to beneficiaries.
Comrade John described the gesture as “legendary, impactful and encouraging”, stressing that it will restore a sense of belonging and dignity to PLWDs. He noted that the initiative aligns strongly with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which emphasizes inclusivity and support for vulnerable groups.
“The provision of these aids will not only ease daily activities for beneficiaries but also reaffirm that God often works through men and initiatives like this to reach those in need,”John said.
He urged the beneficiaries to maximize the use of the mobility devices and to remain hopeful, emphasizing that disability should not define their future.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, Governor Umo Eno appreciated the LDS Church for complementing government’s efforts in supporting the vulnerable. He explained his administration’s inclusive policies, including the appointment of PLWDs into leadership positions such as Permanent Secretary and the distribution of food items to vulnerable households across the 32 Local Government Areas in the State.
“We are committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to all citizens, regardless of their physical conditions, and so I must commend the Church for putting up this initiative and support to the people,” the governor said.
Earlier in his remarks, Elder Alfred Kyungu, President of the Africa West Area of the LDS Church, said the initiative was not just a donation but a long-term commitment to promoting dignity, independence, and a better quality of life for people with mobility challenges.
He also commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for their support and dedication to PLWDs especially by providing compassionate homes and other welfare packages for the less privileged.
Other speakers at the event included Dr. Ini Adiakpan, Delivery Advisor for the Nigeria for Women Project, Mrs. Margaret Edem, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, amongst others, who all lauded the Church for its impactful intervention.
