Akwa Ibom State Police have dismantled a sophisticated car theft syndicate, apprehending five suspects and revealing a network of specialists involved in the operation.
The breakthrough, announced by Command spokesperson DSP Timfon John, came after a diligent investigation led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the subsequent arrest of key members of the criminal organization.
The police investigation began on July 27, 2025, when a stolen vehicle was recovered. This led to the arrest of Otoabasi George Ime, a 42-year-old from Use Abat Village, Ibiono Ibom LGA. His confession on July 30 at 4:30 PM provided critical information, leading to the apprehension of additional syndicate members.
The arrested suspects highlight the group’s specialized nature: Uwem Okon Umoh, a key fabricator; Umoh Joseph Essien, a mechanic; Ukpong Jeremiah Udo, an electrician; Uchenna Peter Ihekandu, a suspected buyer of stolen vehicles; and Peter Madu Abuchi, who handled financial transactions. This indicates a well-structured criminal enterprise with different roles assigned to each member.
During searches, officers recovered a cache of incriminating items, including nine car number plates, various pieces of camouflage and Road Safety gear, and a file of vehicle documents. All suspects have reportedly confessed to their involvement in stealing nine vehicles.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers for their persistence in bringing down the syndicate.
The Command stated that it is continuing its investigation to recover more stolen vehicles and identify any weapons used by the group, reaffirming its dedication to protecting the lives and property of Akwa Ibom residents.
